Greensburg, KS souvenir glass

This is a souvenir glass from Greensburg, KS, home of the “Big Well,” the world’s largest hand dug well, designated a National Museum in 1972. Glass features a map of Kansas showing the locations of numerous cities and sites with “Big Well, Greensburg” above and “Kansas” below. Colors are yellow and black on a completely frosted background. Greensburg, KS is a small town west of Wichita in the heart of “Tornado Alley.” Prior to May 4, 2007, the Big Well was Greensburg’s only claim to fame, but then a monster tornado struck, nearly wiping Greensburg off the face of the earth. 97% of the homes and buildings were destroyed and 11 people were killed. Since then, Greensburg’s residents have shown a remarkable resilience and a determination to not only rebuild their town, but rebuild it “green,” using sustainable resources and building zero energy homes and commercial buildings. The City Council passed a resolution that all city building projects must be built to LEED Platinum level standards, making Greensburg the first city in the United States to do so. LEED is the U.S. Green Building Council’s green building certification system, with Platinum being the highest rating. Greensburg’s recovery plan and the building process have been featured on numerous television programs. Our glass stands 4-3/4" tall with diameters of 2-1/2" at its rim and 2" at its base. Bottom carries the Hazel Atlas mark, so the artwork is undoubtedly by Gay Fad Studios, although not specifically marked as such. Perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, or color loss. Requires hand washing to preserve the finish and paint. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
