1970s

1970 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass

This is a 1970 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass. On a frosted background, the front features a green shield with “Kentucky Derby” in gold on crossed ribbons, as well as a jockey cap, a rose, and an upturned horseshow with a 4-leaf clover. Above the shield in gold are the Churchill Downs twin spires, and below it, also in gold, is “Churchill Downs 1970.” On the back, 4 red jockey caps and crossed whips march around the top, with two more at the bottom. The names of all past winners from 1875-1969 are listed in green, with an asterisk after the 1968 winner Dancer’s Image. Below in red it says “Dancer’s Image purse ordered redistributed to Forward Pass. An appeal to this order is pending.” Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. We have eight of these glasses and price is for each. All are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

The green track posts wrap around the frosted glass, framing the list of winners from 1875-1971. The 1968 winner, Dancer’s Image, is marked with an asterisk, and the glass back says”An appeal to this decision is pending.” Back also says “Churchill Downs” in orange at the top, and depicts the two Churchill Downs spires in green with orange flags flying. 1973 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass

This is a 1973 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass, always in great demand because of its significance in relation to Secretariat’s record-breaking winner’s time that year of 1:59 2/5, which still stands today as the fastest time ever in the Derby. Secretariat went on to win both the Preakness and the Belmont, becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. He won the Belmont by an astounding 31 lengths, and his time of 2:24 still remains the world record on a dirt track. The front of this glass features a frosted midsection on which is depcted the Churchill Downs spires and says “Kentucky Derby” in red and “Churchill Downs 1973" in green. Black filigree is above and below the frosted portion, and in the middle of the top filigree is a horse and jockey, the horse wearing the traditional winner’s collar of red roses. The back lists all the Derby winners from 1875-1972. The 1973 glass was the only one to list two winners for 1968: Dancer’s Image and Forward Pass. Dancer’s Image is marked with an asterisk and says “Finished First.” Forward Pass is marked with a double asterisk and says “Awarded first money purse. Trophy in litigation.” (Forward Pass has been listed as the official 1968 winner on all glasses beginning in 1974.) Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. We have five of these glasses and price is for each. All are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Price: $50.00 each plus s/h and insurance.

1974 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass

This is a 1974 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass. The front depicts a horse’s head, the Churchill Downs steeples, and “1974" in a medallion and says “Kentucky Derby,” “100th Anniversary,” and “Official.” Back lists all the Kentucky Derby winners from 1875-1973, with Triple Crown winners marked with a crown. 1974 was the first year that Triple Crown winners were marked as such on the official mint julep glasses (after Secretariat’s spectacular Triple Crown win in 1973), as well as the first year that Forward Pass was listed as the official 1968 winner (after years of litigation over Dancer’s Image’s win but subsequent disqualification). No markings for fillies. Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. We have nine of these glasses and price is for each. All are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. 1974 Kentucky Derby error glass

This is a 1974 Kentucky Derby error glass that looks exactly like the regular 1974 mint julep glass listed immediately above except for an error in the winners’ list on the back. This error glass lists the 1971 Kentucky Derby winner as Canonero, not as Canonero II, the correct name. Error glasses are always especially collectible and generally increase in value faster than their non-error counterparts. This error glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. We have six of these glasses and price is for each. All are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

1976 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass

This is a 1976 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass from the year America celebrated our bicentennial, so it’s not surprising that the Kentucky Derby chose a patriotic red, white, and blue color scheme that year for their official glasses. On the frosted midsection of the glass front is a highly detailed drawing of a race horse and jockey in front of the Churchill Downs grandstand, flanked by a large “1976.” Above is “Kentucky Derby,” and below is “Official.” A red and white banner with clear glass stars encircles the bottom of the glass. On the frosted midsection of the back is a list of all the winners from 1875-1975 in black, superimposed on a large blue line drawing of the American bald eagle and shield. Triple crown winners are marked with a crown. No markings for fillies. Bottom says “© 1976 Harry M. Stevens, Inc., All Rights Reserved.” Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. We have ten of these glasses and price is for each. All are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Price: $20.00 each plus s/h and insurance.

1976 Kentucky Derby glass combo

This is a special combo consisting of the 1976 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass and the 1976 plastic tumbler produced for the Churchill Downs infield celebration. Since 1976 was the year America celebrated our bicentennial, it’s not surprising that the Kentucky Derby chose a patriotic red, white, and blue color scheme that year for their official mint julep glasses. Perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. The white plastic tumbler stands 5-5/16" tall with diameters of 3-1/4" at the top and 2-1/8" at the bottom. Undoubtedly it was intended to hold beer, not mint juleps, but its front and back designs and colors are virtually identical to those of the mint julep glass. Bottom is marked “Amoco HD16 1.” As you might expect, the infield crowd tend not to keep their plastic beer cups, so these tumblers are quite rare and it’s downright amazing to find a 31-year-old plastic tumbler in pristine condition, but this one is in perfect shape with no nicks, chips, cracks or loss of color. Price: $36.00 plus s/h and insurance.

Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. We have nine of these glasses and price is for each. All are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. 1978 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass

This is a 1978 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass. It is especially collectable because 1978 was the year of probably the greatest rivalry ever in horse racing: Affirmed vs. Alydar. You still see the film today on TV and hear the announcer’s excited voice: “And down the stretch they come....” Affirmed won not only the Derby, but went on to become only the 11th horse in history to win the Triple Crown, and we haven’t had a Triple Crown winner since! The front of the glass depicts Churchill Downs and racing horses, and the back lists all the Kentucky Derby winners from 1875-1977, with Triple Crown winners marked with a crown. Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. We have seven of these glasses and price is for each. All are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches.
