Mexican Metal Art

Brass and abalone cordials

This is a set of 8 exquisite brass cordials from Mexico. Inlaid panels of shimmering iridescent abalone shell encircle the exterior of the 1-1/2" deep cup portion that tapers down to a slender stem ending in a 1-3/8" diameter pedestal foot. Handmade by an unknown Mexican artisan, each cordial is ever so slightly different in size and shape, making them even more unique. They stand 3" tall and are approximately 1" in diameter at the mouth. The underside of several of the feet are incised “Hecho en Mexico” (Spanish for “Made in Mexico”) and although the others are unmarked, obviously all 8 were made to be a set. Wonderful patina which we have made no attempt to clean or polish. Superb vintage condition with no damage whatsoever to either the brass or the abalone shells. An absolutely stunning cordial set! Set of 4 copper mugs

This is a set of four gorgeous copper mugs with brass trim and handles. Handcrafted in elegant simplicity by an unknown Mexican artisan, these unique heavy mugs weigh 11 oz apiece and are just shy of 4" tall with diameters of 3-1/8" at the mouth and 2-3/4" at the bottom. They measure 4" across at the handles. Bottoms are marked “Cobre” (Spanish for  “copper”) and “Made in Mexico.” We’ve never seen any Mexican copper mugs even remotely resembling these, and therefore believe that, as is often the case with Mexican arts and crafts, this set may well be one of a kind. Very good vintage condition with no dents or dings and only the minor spotting and pinpricks typical of older copper pieces. Truly a beautiful and striking set of artistic mugs! Signed Taxco sterling and abalone butterfly pin

The wings of this beautiful sterling silver butterfly pin are gorgeous iridescent blue abalone shells. Pin measures 1-1/8" x 1" and is marked “Taxco Mexico 925” on the back in a circle, inside of which are the artist’s initials “ARM.” This piece dates to the Eagle period (1948-1979) of Mexican jewelry when an Eagle registration stamp was required on all but the smallest of silver pieces, like this one, which had either an Eagle sticker or a separate Eagle plaque. In 1979, the Mexican government instituted a new registration mark policy composed of letters and numbers. This pin features a safety catch closure and is in perfect condition with no dings, dents, or damage to either the silver or the abalone. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Copper coffee set

This beautiful old copper coffee set includes a coffee pot, lidded sugar, lidded creamer, and large serving tray. All handles and finials are made of brass, and the pot, sugar, and creamer have silvered interior linings. All four pieces are marked “Hecho en Mexico” on their bottoms, with “DF” underneath. The coffee pot measures 8-3/4" tall with diameters of 3" at its mouth and 4-1/2" at its base. It is 8-1/4" across from its simple long spout to its dark wood handle. Hinged lid flips back for filling. The 5-1/4" tall lidded sugar has diameters of nearly 2-1/2" at its mouth and 3-1/4" at its base, and measures 5-1/4" across from handle to handle. The 5-1/2" tall creamer also has diameters of 2-1/2" at the mouth and 3-1/4" at the base and measures 5-1/4" across from spout to handle. The creamer and sugar lids are identical and may be used interchangeably. The ovular tray is 16-1/2" long x 11-3/8" wide and measures 19-1/4" from handle to handle. Indented center well prevents the serving pieces from accidently slipping off the tray. This is a very substantial coffee set, weighing nearly 6 pounds. All pieces are in very good vintage condition with a few shallow dents and spots here and there that add character and authenticity while in no way affecting beauty or functionality. Ol’ Swaphos has given all pieces a good initial cleaning and polishing more than sufficient for display purposes, but you will undoubtedly want to do further cleaning, particularly of the interiors, should you wish to actually use this marvelous old copper set for serving coffee. Mexico silver and jade spoon

This is a beautiful 4-1/8" silver and jade spoon from Mexico. The stem top features a 3/8" x 1/4" x 1-1/4" block of Mexican jade elaborately carved into an Aztec totem and the stem itself is inscribed “Mexico.” Stem back also says “Mexico,” above which are several tiny letters that I’m unable to read. Spoon has developed a lovely patina that we’ve made no attempt to clean. Great vintage condition with no dents or dings and no damage to the jade. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
