View-Master 3-Reel Sets
Travel - International

Note: Often the View-Master reels we collect have no protctive sleeves when we acquire them. Such reels come to you in one of our very own SFTP reel sleeves, specially designed by Ol’ Swaphos to keep your reel(s) protected.

Alberta, Canada

View-Master 3-reel set of Alberta, Canada. Reel One (A0091), Reel Two (A0092), and Reel Three (A0093) are all entitled “Alberta, Canada,” are typeset, and carry the GAF name, but no copyright date. Reels (in a GAF 3-reel sleeve) come in their original GAF-Sawyer’s Packet No. A 009 whose front features a photo of a cowboy on a bucking bronco, presumably at the rodeo held in conjunction with the Calgary Stampede, “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” held every summer in Calgary for the past 100 years. Australia

View-Master 3-reel set (Packet No. B 288) of Australia. Reel One (B2881), Reel Two (B 2882), and Reel Three (B 2883) are all entitled “Australia, the Smallest Continent,” are all typeset, and all carry the Sawyer’s name. Set comes in its original Sawyer’s packet. No copyright date, but obviously predates 1958 because the packet photo of Sydney Harbour Bridge shows no indication of the famous Sydney Opera House whose construction began in March of 1959 after the Fort Macquarie Tram Depot, the building originally on the land, was demolished in 1958. Set comes in its original Sawyer’s packet. Tell a friend.

Berlin

This View-Master 3-reel set (Packet No. B 192) of Berlin, complete with story book, contains two reels (Reel One B 1921 and Reel Two B 1922) that were originally part of this packet and one reel (Reel 1 1575-A) that originally must have been part of a different set. These three reels were in this packet when we acquired it, and since all 21 scenes are different, we left this 3-reel “marriage” as is, rather than breaking up the reels. All three reels are typeset and all carry the Sawyer’s name. Reel One and Reel Two have no copyright date, but Reel 1 1575-A says © 1955-1956 Sawyer’s Inc. 16-page story book explains the 21 reel photos and gives additional facts and information about Berlin, “The Divided City.” Set comes in the original Sawyer’s packet. Bermuda

This View-Master 3-reel set (Packet No. B 029) of Bermuda is an example of Sawyer’s early practice of grouping three reels together that had previously been sold as single reels and putting them in a 3-reel packet without renumbering the reels to match the packet number. Reel One is entitled “Island of Bermuda,” is numbered 595 A, and is © 1956, 1958. Reel Two is entitled “Island Activities,” is numbered 595 B, and is © 1958. Reel Three is entitled “Limestone and Gombey,” is numbered 595 C, and is © 1958. All three reels are typeset and carry the Sawyer’s name. Set comes in its original Sawyer’s packet. Tell a friend.

Set comes in its original Sawyer’s packet that also includes its original double-sided Gift Coupon, one side for $2.00 off the purchase of a View-Master 100w Projector and the other side for $5.00 off the purchase of a View-Master 300w Projector. The dealer was required to fill out the coupon and mail it to View-Master within 60 days of sale of the 3-reel packet. A neat bit of vintage rebate history! Tell a friend.

Canada - French language 2-reel set

View-Master Packet-Book with 2-reel set of Canada. Yes, this really is a 16-page full-color View-Master book (not a story folder) with an envelope attached to the inside back cover that contains three View-Master reels. And yes, everything is written in French! After GAF acquired View-Master in 1966, the manufacturing facility in Belgium (established by Sawyer’s in 1953) produced Packet-Books for distribution in Europe and evidently Canada since we acquired this one from a lady who grew up in Quebec. Reel 1 is missing. Reel 2 (Disque Deux A0992) and Reel 3 (Disque Trois A0993), are entitled “Canada,” are typeset, and carry the GAF name, but no copyright date. Both the reel descriptions and the Packet-Book are in French. This is Packet-Book A 099, made in Belgium. Please note that this is a 2-reel set, not a 3-reel set like the others. Tell a friend.

Germany B-193 set #3

View-Master 3-reel set of Germany from the Nations of the World Series. Reel One (B1931), Reel Two (B1932), and Reel Three (B1933) are all entitled “Germany,” are typeset, and carry the Sawyer’s name, but no copyright date. 16-page story folder, edited by Lowell Thomas, explains the 21 reel scenes and gives additional information about “Germany, A Land Divided.”

Obviously Sawyer’s produced these reels during the 40-year period from 1949-1989 when Europe, and Germany in particular, was divided by the Iron Curtain,, a euphemism popularized by Winston Churchill in his March 5, 1946 “Sinews of Peace” address at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. The Iron Curtain referred to the border defenses between the countries of Europe in the middle of the continent separating “the Western Bloc” from “the Soviet Bloc” during the Cold War. At the end of WWII, the Allies had divided Germany into four occupation zones, one for each of the four Allied countries. But we quickly discovered that while Russia may have been an Ally in the War, the U.S.S.R. was NOT our post-war friend! The Cold War started almost immediately, and in 1949 Germany’s American, British, and French occupation zones became the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) with its capital in Bonn, while the Russian (Soviet) occupation zone became the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) with its capital in East Berlin. Why East Berlin instead of simply Berlin? Because Berlin was not only completely surrounded by East Germany, but was itself divided, at first informally, but ultimately by the infamous Berlin Wall, which East Germany started building on August 13, 1961 to prevent its citizens from escaping into West Berlin and from there to West Germany. The wall stayed up for 28 years, leading to such U.S. presidential protests as President Kennedy’s famous June 26, 1963 “Ich bin ein Berliner” (“I am a Berliner”) speech and President Reagan’s even more famous June 12, 1987 exhortation to Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” The Wall did indeed start coming down in November of 1989 and East and West Germany were subsequently reunified into one country in 1990. Sorry about the history lesson, but it’s important for today’s “youngsters” to realize that the Cold War was so all-encompassing for so many years that it invaded every aspect of our lives, even such pop culture icons as a View-Master 3-reel set.

Our reels (each in a Sawyer’s multi-colored single reel sleeve) and story folder come in their original Sawyer’s Packet No. B 193 whose front features a photo of the Castle at Cochem and Moselle Valley. Tell a friend.
