Hearst Castle

View-Master 3-reel set of Hearst Castle, the jewel of the compound built by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst from 1919-1947 on a San Simeon, CA mountaintop overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Reel One (A1901), Reel Two (A1902), and Reel Three (A1903) are all entitled “Hearst Castle, California State Monument, San Simeon, Calif.” All three reels are typeset and carry the Sawyer’s name, but no copyright date. 16-page story folder, edited by Lowell Thomas, gives a brief history of the Castle and explains the 21 reel scenes. BTW, it was rumored that Hearst built the castle for his paramour, film actress and comedienne Marion Davies, with whom he lived openly for decades, often at the Castle, where a never-ending parade of Hollywood legends were guests, as well as such notable politicians as Franklin Delano Roosevelt! Hearst died in 1951 and the Hearst Corporation donated the property to the state of California in 1957, where it became a state historic park. It was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Reels (in a Sawyer’s-GAF 3-reel sleeve) and story book come in their original GAF Packet No. A 190 whose front features a large photo of the Castle’s Gothic Room, with a smaller set-in of the Castle facade. Niagra Falls

View-Master 3-reel set of Niagra Falls. Reel 81 is entitled “Niagra Falls, New York, U.S.A.” and is © 1954. Reel 82 is entitled “Niagra Falls in Winter, New York” and has no copyright date. Reel 375 is entitled “Niagra Falls, Ontario, Canada” and is © 1948. All three reels are typeset and carry the Sawyer’s name. Reels (each in a Sawyer’s blue and white individual reel sleeve) come in their original Sawyer’s mailer that is © 1950 and whose front features a photo of the falls from “along the rim promenade.” Packet back specifically says that the packet contains Reel No’s. 81, 82, 375. That’s really interesting, don’t you think? The only thing I can think of is that at the time this mailer was produced, Sawyer’s still had some Reels 81 and 82, but had run out of Reel 83 and was in the process of renumbering their reels as they ran out of the old ones (such as Reel 83). The new reels had the same photos as the old ones, but now had a new number (such as Reel 375). Bet when they ran out of the 81s and 82s, those new reels were renumbered as 373 and 374 respectively and the three newly numbered reels appeared in a new packet! Tell a friend.

Price: $18.95 - includes shipping to anywhere in the U.S.A.

All three reels are typeset and carry the Sawyer’s name. Reels come in their original Sawyer’s Packet No. A 655, whose front features a photo of the American and Horseshoe Falls.
