Charlie Brown’s Summer Fun

View-Master 3-reel set featuring the adventures of Charlie Brown, Charles M. Schulz’s beloved Peanuts comic strip character. Reel 1 (B5481) is entitled “Croquet, Almost Anybody?,” Reel 2 (B5482) is entitled “The Hazards of Kite Flying,” and Reel 3 (B5483) is entitled “The Cold-blooded Killer.” All 3 reels are typeset, carry the GAF name, and are © 1972 United Feature Syndicate, Inc. However, even though these reels are copyrighted to 1972, they were produced by GAF between 1977 and 1981, the period during which GAF used its own brand of film that turned red over time. The images on all three of these reels have a decided red cast to them. But despite the esthetically-challenged appearance of GAF film reels, collectors seek them out because so few of them were produced. Set comes in the non-original packet it was in when we acquired it that has a full-color picture of the original packet front. Tell a friend.

Those of us who grew up in the 1950s remember Roy Rogers and Dale Evans as the singing husband & wife duo of the Roy Rogers TV series from 1951-1957 (“Happy trails to you until we meet again.”), but they also starred together in numerous movies. Their names are so closely linked that everyone tends to assume that they were “always” married. But no! Come to find out, Dale was Roy’s third wife and Roy was Dale’s fourth husband! Who knew??? Nevertheless, they were married for 51 years before Roy’s death in 1998 at age 86. Just goes to show you, never give up! Be sure to see our Roy Rogers 3-reel set listed later in this section. Mary Poppins

View-Master 3-reel set of Mary Poppins, Walt Disney’s delightful 1964 musical starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. And just in case you ever want to win a Trivial Pursuit game, there’s a whole back story here. It all started with “My Fair Lady,” another wildly popular 1964 musical. Julie Andrews had played the female lead of Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway production of “My Fair Lady,” but when it came time to do the movie, the part went to Audrey Hepburn since she was a much bigger star than Julie Andrews. (Never mind that Audrey Hepburn couldn’t sing and her songs were actually sung by Marnie Nixon, a behind-the-scenes “playback singer” for many other actresses, too, such as Deborah Kerr in “The King and I” and Natalie Wood in “West Side Story.”) Julie Andrews was crushed and Hollywood was abuzz with this huge snub. But then came “Mary Poppins” which turned Julie Andrews into an instant megastar. Fast-forward to the 1965 Academy Awards. “Mary Poppins” received 13 Oscar nominations and won five Academy Awards, including Julie Andrews as Best Actress, making “Mary Poppins” the most Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated Disney film in history! On the other hand, “Mary Poppins” and “My Fair Lady” were up against each other for both Best Picture and Best Director, and “My Fair Lady” won both of these categories. But I digress. Reel One (B3761), Reel Two (B3762), and Reel Three (B3763) are all entitled “Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins – A Disney Classic.” Reels are typeset, carry the Sawyer’s name, and are © 1964 Walt Disney Productions. 16-page full-color story folder tells a synopsis of the Mary Poppins story via the 21 reel scenes. Reels (in their Sawyer’s 3-reel sleeve) and story folder come in their original Sawyer’s Packet No. B 376 whose front features a photo of Mary Poppins using her umbrella to float above a London street. Mighty Mouse

View-Master 3-reel set of Mighty Mouse, the flying rodent hero (originally named Super Mouse) who starred in 80 cartoon films from 1942-1961, many of which then ran as a CBS Saturday morning cartoon series from 1955-1967. Reel One (B5261) is entitled “Mighty Mouse Grows Up,” Reel Two (B5262)  is entitled “Mighty Mouse Meets Powerful Puss,” and Reel Three (B5263) is entitled “Mighty Mouse’s Great Battle.” Reels are typeset, carry the Sawyer’s name, and are © 1958 Terrytoons, a Division of CBS Television Film Sales, Inc. 5-panel fold-out tells the three reel stories, giving details of the 21 reel scenes. Mighty Mouse was my son’s favorite hero, leading to a Mighty Mouse Halloween costume so he could “fly” off his bed, covered in Mighty Mouse sheets and bedspread, singing “Here I Come To Save The Day...” at the top of his lungs! I still remember every word of that theme song, and I’m sure he does, too. But I digress. Reels (each in a Sawyer’s red and white individual reel sleeve) and story folder come in their original Sawyer’s Packet No. B 526 whose front depicts Mighty Mouse zooming in to save a hapless relative from the jaws of the evil Powerful Puss.
